School History

Old Photo of SchoolThe School is situated at one end of Station Road. Its main sandstone building was built in 1860. In 1943 the school became both Primary and Junior Secondary for children up to the age of 15.

1949 saw Mr Ramsay (an ex-professional footballer) take over as dominee (headmaster). The then playground was a mud heap. There were dry toilets and electricity was just being installed. There was a roll of 263 and no washing up facilities! Mrs Norrie one of Inverkeilor's senior citizens and a former teacher at the school recalls her first class being composed of 50 pupils! During the war, evacuees from Dundee came to Inverkeilor with their teachers, sharing the school with the local pupils. By the late 1950's the 3 Horsa huts had been added and technical and domestic subjects were taught in two of them. The 3rd was a dining hall (which was used until the school was refurbished in the summer of 2003). Toilets and wash-up failities were much updated also.

The school played a special part in village social life when Mr Ramsay provided a weekly film show in the village hall, which was also used as the gymnasium. 200 adults and children were attracted to this 2 hour performance of what was then reasonably up to date films. Admission was charged at 1s 3d for adults and 6d (two and a half pence) for children, the profits from which, went to school funds.

As we can see the village school is the mainstay of a rural community - without one many would leave the area. Still today through Inverkeilor school much of the population in its wide catchment area are brought into contact with each other via events like P.T.A. meetings, school concerts, fund-raising and community council meetings etc.

Currently it is a Primary school only, providing excellent education, in the capable hands of headmistress Mrs. J Milne and her dedicated staff who are entrusted with a roll of approx. 90 children who may walk, bike or be bussed to Inverkeilor from Auchmithie and surrounding areas.
